THE MEDITATION

Mila then remained eleven months walled in a cave with a lamp on his head, and practised meditation day and night. Then Marpa came to get him. They went down to the Hermitage. The mother cooked a banquet for the father and the son. Mila then revealed what he understood from the teaching:

'I understood that the Greater Vehicle was to sacrifice oneself through the virtues of pity and compassion for the cause of all creatures.'

After having spoken of the teaching in the way he understood it, Mila returned to his cave and meditated assiduously. Marpa, in spite of his old age, again went to India to receive a principle that he did not know. Naropa was dead, but he would appear to his disciple and give him the final teachings. When Marpa came back, he asked his disciples to describe their dreams in order to determine who would transmit the Kagyupa doctrine to modern times. Mila was chosen by the gods. Marpa conferred all the initiations on his disciples and divided the doctrine among them. Each one would have to insure the survival of what he received.

The great disciples then departed and spread the doctrine. Only Mila remained a few more years with Marpa. Soon, it was time for the separation. The mother prepared a banquet. She was shaken by grief. Marpa realized that they would never see each other again.

'Having said this, she increased her mourning twofold. As for me, my tears were unbearable. The Lama himself wept. Master and disciple, we suffer in our mutual affection and our mourning leaves us speechless.'

Mila returned to his village. The house was in ruins. His mother was dead. His sister had left to lead a wandering beggar's life. He felt great pain.
